Choosing a wood. A good quality wood floor needn't cost the earth.
Our extensive selection of real wood starts from as little as £15.99, going up to £59.99m². With professional estimating and fitting, plus a 5 year fitting guarantee, you can be sure you're investing in lasting value, that?s only going to become more beautiful over time. Different wood types age in different ways - some deepen and become richer while others turn lighter. However, if you don't want to wait, Allied have many wood floors that give you an instant, authentic aged look.
Do I to take up the floorboards first?
The condition of your existing floorboards is vitally important. They must be dry and level and the new boards should be laid perpendicular over them. If that's not possible, it's advisable to lay 6mm plywood on top of the floorboards. Always check for woodworm before laying the floor.
Can I lay a solid wood floor over concrete?
Yes, but it must be dry and level with a damp-proof membrane. Use a moisture meter before the floor is laid (the moisture level should be no more than 3 per cent). If you're in a new-build, you should wait at least four to six months to lay solid wood on your concrete floor.
How is a solid wood floor fixed in place?
Boards tend to come in tongue and groove planks, which are glued or nailed down. The latest ranges include boards that click together for easier installation.
Can I put solid wood in any room?
Avoid solid wood floors in bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories or any other room where it will be exposed to excessive humidity and temperature changes. Wood can expand as it absorbs moisture and shrink in drier conditions.
