Allied History

1950s

Allied Carpets started life back in the 1950s when Harold Plotnek began trading from market stalls in Birmingham. Towards the end of the 1950s Harold expanded and opened a warehouse in Birmingham.

1970s

The company went from strength to strength and in 1974 opened a head office in West Bromwich. In 1978, it was purchased by the Asda Group.

1980s

Continuing to grow, curtains and soft furnishings were introduced. Towards the end of 1983 they opened their first two out of town stores, one in Edinburgh and the other in Chester. In 1984 beds were introduced. A re-brand of the company took place in 1985 and the Allied name has remained on our retail parks and high streets ever since. In the same year a contracts and insurance replacement service was started, and upholstery products were sold. By the end of the decade they had increased their portfolio of shops achieving nationwide status and changed its name to Allied Maple Group Ltd.

1990s

Carpetland bought out the company in December 1993 and changed their name to Allied Carpets. In 1994 the West Bromwich head office relocated to Kent and the stores stopped selling upholstery in order to focus on what they do best, selling flooring. This strategy has remained to this day and Allied continue to be the leading authority on flooring. By the late 90s Allied was purchased by Tapis Saint-Maclou, France's largest carpet retailer.

2000s

By the turn of the century Allied Carpets were the most recognisable flooring retailer in the UK. Priding themselves on quality products, service and value for money Allied continue to be the nation's best loved supplier of carpets, rugs, vinyl, laminate and wood flooring. Recently purchased and re-launched, the Allied brand continues to be at the forefront of flooring innovation.
